D&C Platter ~ 1923 Scammell ~ "Greater Detroit" Pattern

$300.00

This is the biggest piece of shipping china I've ever seen! This platter measures 17 1/2 by 12 1/2 inches and weighs over 5 pounds!

The pattern is called Greater Detroit (D&C-2) and features the script letters D&C in cobalt blue with matching twin stripes around the rim. It was manufactured by Scammell's Lamberton China in 1923 according to the backstamp. Also stamped on the back is Made Expressly for D&C Navigation Co., Detroit, Mich.

Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Company started in 1868 and, with a name change, through 1951. The steamships operated on the Great Lakes with luxurious accommodations and stops at Niagara Falls, Buffalo, Mackinac Island, Chicago and other cities.

The platter is in excellent condition, no chips, cracks or hairlines. There is moderate utensil use and a few manufacturer dots of color here and there in the well. The rim on the underside has brown coloration under the glaze, also done during the manufacturing process. Please see the pictures. Again, no chips, cracks or hairlines on this very hard to find serving piece.  It was manufactured by Scammell's Lamberton in 1923.

Thanks for looking!
