This serving bowl is from the Nautilus Hotel in Miami Beach. The hotel opened in 1924 and was built by Carl Fisher, an entrepreneur most famous for his various hotels, which included The King Cole, The Flamingo and Montauk Manor, to name a few. After a hurricane in 1927 and The Great Depression in 1929, the hotel closed and Mount Sinai Medical Center opened on the site.
The bowl features the well-known nautilus shell in brown and blue with green stripes around the rim. It measures 8 14 by 6 1/2 inches and stands 1 1/2 inches tall. Maddock Pottery manufactured this bowl on its Lamberton China body circa 1918-1924, making it part of the original china used at the hotel. John Wanamaker was the distributor and it is fully backstamped with the hotel name.
The bowl shows moderate wear with just a small rim chip. No other damage.
