NIARCHOS Ltd. Dinner Plate - Greek Shipping Line

$20.00

This dinner plate came from the estate of a ship's pilot. According to his heir, he worked in the Panama Canal circa 1963-1979. Custom was to tip the pilot for safely steering the ship through the canal. Usual tips were a bottle of whisky or a carton of cigarettes but this gentleman neither imbibed not smoked so he always asked for a piece of china off each vessel.

This dinner plate is from the Niachros Ltd., a Greek line owned by billionaire Stavros Niachros (1909-1996), the arch rival of Aristotle Onassis. He was sometimes referred to as "The Golden Greek." He built the first oil supertankers in 1952 and increased his fortune as global demand for his ships increased.

The dinner plate is marked with the Niachros logo, an N with 3 stripes behind, in blue. The backstamp reads Reinforced Vitrite, Bristol, England. The plate measures just over 9 1/2 inches and is in excellent condition, no chips, cracks or hairlines. Moderate utensil use in the well. Hard to find pattern! Thanks for looking and please see all 3 pictures of this great plate.
