MOUNTAIN CITY CLUB Shenango Butterpat ~ Chattanooga

$15.00

For your consideration is a butterpat with the MCC mark indicating Mountain City Club.

This club was chartered in 1889 as a gentlemen's club with 137 members. The first building was constructed on the corner of Seventh and Cherry Street in Chattanooga and was the meeting place of business and civic leaders. Members met to play cards, dine and fraternize. Overnight guests were allowed. After moving several more times, the club is now situated at 729 Chestnut Street.

The club remained an all-mens club until 1959 when sons of members were allowed to attend meals with their fathers. Female guests were allowed to attend receptions in 1904 but the first female member was not accepted until 1992. Today the club offers fine dining, billiards, a health club, a library and reading room, game rooms and more. Cigar smoking is allowed in some areas.

Made by Shenango China, this striking pattern was in use at the club for 75 years, until about 10 years ago when the pattern was replaced. The 3 inch butterpat is datecoded 1963 and features an intricate tan, brown and blue border of fruits and flowers. The center of the pat reads MCC. There are no chips, cracks or hairlines on this vintage piece of restaurant ware and moderate utensil use showing in the well. There is plenty of glaze, the transfer colors are vivid, just a nice piece all around.

Don't miss this opportunity to not only add an unusual restaurant ware butterpat to your collection but also a great old piece of Chattanooga history. Thanks for looking and please see both pictures.
