This butterpat is from Childs Restaurant which started in Lower Manhattan and grew to become one of the largest restaurant chains in the country. It pioneered the self-service cafeteria. The chain, founded by William and Samuel Childs, was in operation from 1899 to circa 1960's.

Each restaurant was similarly built with white tiles on the floor and walls as well as white marble countertops. Employees also continued with the white theme, in crisp uniforms. Wholesome food at reasonable prices was offered.

In 1927 William Childs began serving only vegetarian meals due to health concerns, but the meatless policy was eventually reversed after a drop in business.

The restaurant was awarded the contract for food service for the 1933 New York World's Fair and served over 16 million hot dogs.

The 1923 location on Coney Island recently was awarded landmark status.

The sliverplate butter pat measures approx. 2 5/8 inches and features the Childs name in script in the center. Moderate wear to the pat. It was made by Cecilware.

Great piece of New York history! Thanks for looking and please see all 3 pictures.
