Historic CLAREMONT Hotel Piece ~ NYC Grant's Tomb

$20.00

This is a most interesting shape for restaurant ware. The concave piece is just 5 1/4 inches in width. It's almost an ashtray shape except that there are no indentations for the butts.  Or an odd shaped butterpat.

Historic Claremont Hotel was located at Riverside Drive, across from Grant's Tomb, in New York City. The hotel was once the residence of Joseph Bonapart, later named King of Spain by Napoleon.

From Wikipedia comes this info:

In Riverside Park, north of Grant's Tomb, is the site of the former Claremont Inn, a riverside respite and hotel for the affluent back in its heyday. It was originally built around 1775 as a private mansion and estate. By the end of the 19th century it was bought by the city of New York and leased to a hotelier. There was also a place to rent bicycles at the inn. It had a serious fire in the 1940s which caused its demise. A plan was in the making for a reuse of the inn and restaurant and grounds when yet a final fire caused its closing in 1951. A stone plaque marks where it once stood

It is now Claremont Playground.

Greenwood China manufactured this piece circa 1886-1910. Historic Claremont is in the well in brown with a matching brown line near the rim. Slight embossed design on the ends.

On the back is the impressed Greenwood China, Trenton, N.J. and backstamped is the distributor info Made For R.A. Gusheee Co. for L. Straus & Sons, New York.

Amazing historical find! And it's in wonderful condition, showing just a few utensil marks.

Thanks for looking!
